Giant Egret

Something different, here. For a start, this is a watercolour study of a Giant Egret, rather than my usual medium of choice (Acrylic). It’s also part of a Triptych (see ‘Flamingo’ & ‘Japanese Crane’).

Ambition is a funny thing, isn’t it? Whilst some people aspire to climb mountains or run marathons, I always wanted to paint some long-legged birds! BUT, in order to capture the ‘ungainly elegance’ of the Giant Egret, I decided that watercolour was the best way forward. Mind you, it was so fiddly and unforgiving, that I haven’t returned to it since!

Being such a ‘fluid’ medium (pun intended), watercolour needs to be worked in the moment and I have great respect for those who master the techniques.
