Hot to Trot

For ‘Hot to Trot’, I chose to make a conscious break with the vibrant Rooster seen elsewhere on this site. Instead, for this trotting Hen, I continued the wintry theme seen in a few of my other works and adopted a suitable palette.

What really works for me in this picture, is the sense of movement in the Hen as she scuttles across the canvas. I’m happy with the plumage, as well. Look closely, and you’ll pick out a rich variety of colours, ‘smuggled-in’ to the overall grey-blue tones. They contrast nicely with the bold, confident reds in her comb: ‘Hot to Trot’ indeed!
