Wren

My studio is blessed with two opposing windows, that each open out onto the garden. As a result, I spend a LOT of time staring out, in search of inspiration… So, it was perhaps inevitable that I should create a little series focussing on some of the visitors!

For this initial series of British Garden Birds, I’ve gone with four of my favourites: a Robin, Goldfinch, Long-tailed tit and a Wren. I painted each one in acrylics, onto an 8″ x 10″ plywood panel. For this Wren, I applied liberal amounts of a rich, lustrous gold paint around its border. After that, I moved on to gilding, using precious 24ct Gold Leaf. It adds a dazzling, rich texture to a series that I’ll be adding to, in the months to come.
