Night Mail

‘Night Mail’ originally began with an attempt at capturing the style of German engraver Albrecht Dürer. The Hare painting that emerged was something of a ‘worthy misfire’, so hid for years in my sizeable pile of ‘maybe-but-not-quites’.

That is, until I began painting more Fantasy and could see a new direction for the work: make my Hare a courier… Once decided, Night Mail came together very quickly. To begin with, I added engraved-metal tips for his ears & cape. This was followed by an intricate set of ‘night-vision’ goggles, a soft-grey ‘saddlebag’ overflowing with important scrolls and lots more.

Our Courier also has a Red Squirrel for a companion. He’s brought them to an abrupt halt, on seeing the skull of a mythical Jackalope at the roadside. There’s also a discarded amethyst, which just happens to match those worn by the Hare. Is it a trap? Look to the dark shadows in the treeline and decide for yourself!
