Jack Rabbit

This North American Jack Rabbit is not only one of my earliest works in oil… It’s also an early venture into a style of painting called ’tiling’. It’s a technique in which paint is laid-down in stubby brush strokes, that add texture and depth to the work.

The result resembles a ‘mosaic’ in which the overall form is broken down into loose ‘pixels’ of colour. The background also benefits from the effect. Here, the larger swabs of colour suggest distinct bands for the abstract horizon. I think the overall effect works well for this Jack Rabbit and it’s a technique I’ll return to in the future!
