Grizzly Bear

This Grizzly Bear is one of my earliest ventures into using oils with a style of painting I call ’tiling’. By that, I mean laying paint down with short, stubby brush-strokes to create a ‘mosaic’ effect. It leaves the overall form, broken-down into abstract, stubby ‘pixels’ of colour.

The same technique has been used for the background, though here the ’tile’ sizes have been increased. Now, we get an impressionistic suggestion of treetops, skyline and more. I was very pleased with the overall colour harmonies here. That, and how the tiling extended into the form & features of the Grizzly. A satisfying picture!
