Out of the White #2

The first version of this piece (‘Out of the White #1’) was deliberately restricted, in-scope as much as palette. So, for Out of the White #2 I had two obvious opportunities. First, I wanted to open-up the palette to my familiar blues & purples. I was struck at the amazing variety of colours to be found within ice floes and crevasses. A myriad pinks, purples & blues, would suit both theme & composition.

Second, I wanted to capture something of the Bear’s purpose and power. I wanted him to look as if he’s about to walk out of the picture. I think it gets close to conveying that impression, yet there’s also a gentleness to be found within the work I found both reassuring & humbling. An imposing work on a grand scale, Out of the White #2 remains a highlight of my career.
