Over the Rainbow's Shoulder

Over the Rainbow’s Shoulder came from an experiment with a more textured, emotional background, in contrast to the neutral tones used in other work.

The approach allows more expressive use of colour, with the added burst of red adding drama to the otherwise plain backdrop. For the Badger itself, I opted for a technique involving white brush strokes as a base layer. Over that, I added a ‘glaze’ of various transparent colours to achieve the desired effect. So pleased was I with this effect, that I began using it more often, in other work. Take a look at Rainbow Hare #2 & Rainbow Hare #3, to see more vibrant examples. You could say that Over the Rainbow’s Shoulder was a ‘successful prototype’!
