Purple Hare #1

‘PURPLE HARE #1’ is such an important work in my career. It marks the first time I was to use the rich purple & blue tones for a wildlife piece. As things turned-out, it was to become a recurring theme.

I’m particularly fond of how the splotches and splashes lend an air of movement to the work. In addition, I should mention the contrast achieved by the ‘golden eye’ against the purple tones; a real focus point. Purple Hare #1 represented a breakthrough in another way. For years, I’d been a professional wildlife sculptor. I’d come to painting late in the day, so to complete a work such as this meant something. It showed me that I could move on, creatively.
