Washing the Hare

I’ve been asked many times for the inspiration behind Washing the Hare and its companion work, ‘Touchdown!’…

Well, I guarantee that if you walk the rolling fields of the Wiltshire Downs for long enough, you’ll see a Hare… Even if it’s just the sight of its backside as it sprints across the field! On this particular day, I came across this character giving himself a wash. I was struck by his ungainly, inelegant pose. Immediately, I thought of how this might work as a painting. When the time came, I painted him in a loose, casual style. After that, a finishing touch came from liberal use of an acrylic pen, to add movement.
